Red Hill (2010)
I’m not a huge fan of anything that has the backdrop of a Western. The fact that I took the leap to watch this film really shows an open mind, but I had read good things about the film. The film was in no way terrible, and despite having to deal with Ryan Kwanten’s terrible accent, and all the sand, the film was decent. The film takes us on the hell ride of a police officer attending his first day of work in a new town. The town is small (300 people), but his pregnant wife and him decided it was best for them to have the child somewhere quiet (although quiet and population of 300 are two very different things). We learn that there is an escapee out of prison and as the film progresses , the bloodbath begins. The film is pretty standard. I’m not sure if the “twist” at the end was supposed to be a twist or not because the ending of the film was pretty predictable. The best pieces of the film is when the escaped maniac shows little mercy on the policemen of the small town. It did strike me odd that for a town with only 300 people, 10 of them worked at the police station. Anyways, I don’t know if I would recommend seeing the film or not, if you enjoy Western-styled films (and horror/thriller), then you will probably like this film more than I did. I didn’t find the dialogue to be particularly compelling, and it seemed as if the writers really left a lot of possibility out of the film and just went with “crazy guy shoots people). For example, I was really waiting for a scene where the cops go to the deputy’s house and kidnap his wife (which would have been cliche, but still mixing it up a bit). Overall, the film wasn’t overly impressive but I didn’t hate it.
