Summary

Rating: ★★★★★★½☆☆☆
I will start off by saying : “I liked the town”, but there were a few things that made it close to the fringe-line for me. There were some major unbelievability factors embedded within the film (which I suspended because I liked other aspects of the film), and the duration (at 150 minutes) was a bit difficult to deal with. I did enjoy the “love story” that the film offered and sort of the moral dilemmas that ensued for the main character (even though some of it felt far fetched). Overall, I would say the film was decent — although not as amazing as my roommate suggested (using the word epic).

Description

As he plans his next job, a longtime thief tries to balance his feelings for a bank manager connected to one of his earlier heists, as well as the FBI agent looking to bring him and his crew down.

Quickie

I will start off by saying : “I liked the town”, but there were a few things that made it close to the fringe-line for me. There were some major unbelievability factors embedded within the film (which I suspended because I liked other aspects of the film), and the duration (at 150 minutes) was a bit difficult to deal with. I did enjoy the “love story” that the film offered and sort of the moral dilemmas that ensued for the main character (even though some of it felt far fetched). The Good

The acting was pretty good in the film. Rebecca Hall was superb and Ben Affleck (whom I usually like anyways) did a great job as well. I have to say I am impressed with Ben Affleck as a director. Although “The Town” wasn’t as good as “Gone Baby Gone”, you could tell it had a very realistic feel to the film, which is what I really loved about the film. Despite the believability within the plot, the emotion and feel of the film was very realistic. There were def. some moments in the film that had me on edge (i.e. when Claire almost sees the tattoo), which made for some nice suspense in the film. The hybrid heist-drama seemingly worked well as you got a look of both sides of the story (from the “good guys” and “bad guys), which is not a new concept, but I think that aspect was done pretty well.

The Bad

A few points throughout the film, I just kind of lost interest (mainly near the end) because I felt as if it was outside the suspension of disbelief. I had to ability to grasp Claire’s eventual acceptance of Doug. It seems to me that if someone introduced a traumatic event in your life and then lied to you (and subsequently slept with you under all of this false pretense) that you would never forgive them (like she initially said) — I understand that her forgiving him worked for the film, but seemed a bit out of reach for me. Like I mentioned before, the film was bordering “way too long” (understandably I watched the extended cut).

Overall

I would say that the town was a good film – I would suggest watching the regular cut (which is still 2 hours) – but feel as if you could get what the story offered out of that version.
