The Big Lebowski (1998)
Summary
Genre: ComedyGoodies:
+ Great cast of actors and characters, + Lots of nods to 80s comedyBaddies:
- Not as good as the hype plays it to be“Dude” Lebowski, mistaken for a millionaire Lebowski, seeks restitution for his ruined rug and enlists his bowling buddies to help get it.
I’ll start off by saying I liked the film, and with that said do not like it as much as other people. This was just one of those movies that went by me when it came by and I have had it for a while, but just haven’t gotten around to watching it. The movie was funny, and I think what makes it such a popular movie over time is it’s quotability. In some ways, it’s a more adult buddy comedy prototype from the 80’s, which is a great layout to work with. I think what really makes the film is Dude’s lackadaisical nature and how he just doesn’t really care about anything. Walter is pretty hilarious as well with his erratic behavior. The film very much drew me into the comedies of the late 80’s, which I appreciated (as it’s one of my favorite time periods for films). It was really interesting to see Julianne Moore in such an offbeat kind of role, which was pretty awesome. You’ve probably already seen this film, and you probably love it a lot more than I do (basically because everyone seems to think it is one of the best films ever). Like I said, I liked the film and maybe there was too much of a build up over the years with people bowing down as one of the greatest comedies of all time. It was funny, at times even hilarious, but won’t be going into my repertoire of funniest movies i’ve ever seen. With that said, I think everyone should see it (partially because most everyone has seen it). It offers some great acting, some hilarious jokes, and overall ridiculous situations which makes it a really fun time to watch. Don’t take this review as a criticism, I liked it, I just didn’t go crazy over it! As per Coen brothers go (it’s really either hit or miss with them for me), I prefer Fargo!
the Dude abides.
Personally, I think this is a movie that benefits from repeat viewings. You should watch it again! Also, did you notice how The Dude repeats things he hears from others through the whole movie? He does it like 40-something times. “This aggression will not stand… man.” Maybe that’s why it’s so quotable?!
