If you are a fan of 80s films, then Super 8 should impress you. The fact that this film was released in 2011 and feels like it is 1988 all over again is a feeling I haven’t gotten since the actual 80s. Now, the fact that Spielberg produce the film probably has a lot to do with that (seeing as he did a lot of great films in the 80s). The archetype of a small group of pre-teenage boys out for an adventure gives nods to films like the Goonies and even IT. I felt like a kid again in the best way. When I first went into the film I hadn’t seen many advertisements, so I thought it was a horror, which has small inklings (there’s a bit of gore, etc.) throughout the film. At it’s core, I would call it an adventure film even though it has the periphery of horror and science fiction. It even has the over-zealous fat kid who learns a few lessons by the end of the film. It’s hard to sum up the greatness of Super 8 in words (much like the feeling of nostalgia), so I would suggest watching it if you have any attraction to that type of film.
