Review

Many of you know that I am skeptical of mainstream horror, as my standards are pretty high for my favorite genre (though I will watch just about anything, despite this fact). Sequels (like remakes) are one of the fallshorts of mainstream cinema. One has no other choice but to think, “come up with something original”, which is what I normally think, but for some reason, with Scream 4, never had that thought. This scared me to be excited because I did not want to be let down by the butchering that often happens. I have to say that if you are a fan of Scream 1-3, you will be on the Scream 4 bandwagon as well. The film is very meta (meta-meta-meta) in the sense that there are films within films, and like its predecessors, speaks heavily about horror movies and the rules that are contained within them. The film, on a very basic level, is just fun. Nothing about the film sticks out in my head, but I enjoyed the updated references to films (Saw for example), and the critique on remakes and sequels. Scream was the 90’s version of the 80’s slashers, and gave way to a heaping pile of crappy b-level horrors that I loved and rented throughout my teenage years. Scream 4, using magic, undoubtedly, is able to update this concept to work in 2011. Because the film was so meta, it was hard to keep track of what was going on (which can be good for the basic slasher film) to figure out who the killer could be, so viewers start suspecting everyone, or assuming they will throw out some new rules. The ending is satisfying, campy (in a good way), and worth the big screen visit. If you were not a fan of the series, this chapter is no different as far as liking characters, types of plot devices, and general feel/environment. If you are a fan, the same applies!
