Review

Pontypool is a film that I have been wanting to see for a long time, but just never made it on my screen, I almost wish that I had seen it earlier so that I would not have had all of that time where I was wanting to see it — because it was terrible. The whole film was not bad at all. The first half was actually really good, I was very much into the concept. The film felt very isolated, 3 people working in a radio station, uncovering what, in your head, is a typical zombie film, OUTSIDE of the station, but with no real indicators of the cheesiness that can infect the zombie genre. It was a new twist that had me very engaged and very excited. Then, without a moment’s warning the film turned in a super-illogical sci-fi zombie crumble-cake. The reasons for the infection were extremely laughable (because of a radio wave – which they never even explain how this is possible), and once the zombies enter the picture, the film gets campy in a way that is irredeemable. Had the film continued with shrouding plot from within the station, exterior to random craziness and doctors saying that words like “honey” and “baby” spread the virus (terms of endearment), and that there are some magical words (or french words) that cure the virus. If this makes sense to you, see the film instantly, or watch the first 1/2 hour, then think of it as a short film with an unreliable ending (because honestly it will be better than the actual ending). It is almost as if two different writers were hired for the first and second halves of the film – watch this film at the risk of your own IQ.
