If you have seen the original Troma Mother’s Day, do NOT go into this film thinking it is a remake. Even though it is charted as such, the premise of the film is entirely different, the character structures, types of violence, the whole 9 yards, so dispatch your expectations right now! With that said, Mother’s Day as a completely separate film was pretty good! In a world where pre-digested horror needs nerve to set itself apart, the acting of “the mother”. The film centers around a group of adults having a party in their fairly new home, when 3 “deranged” (I put that in quotes, because the way the movie totes these men as being psychotic is nowhere near where other films have gone – think Last House on the Left) robbers come back to their “home” (which has been repossessed). Enter “mother” a bit later, and the film starts getting good. Now, what sets MD apart from other films is this character, her calmness creates a sense of both safety and alarm, which makes you think “im not going to fuck with her!” (I wouldn’t). Her rules and structures become unraveled throughout the night when the party-goers are asked to do several tasks for her delight. Ironically, the “horror” comes from the audiences inability to figure out this character (what does she want? is she being honest? etc.). Now, MD isn’t going to win any awards by any means, but like I said, in a swamp amassed with a lot of crap, MD feeds my horror-cravings in a way that hasn’t been tamed very much this year (besides Insidious, i’m lost for another great horror i’ve seen). I don’t think most people who will see this film saw the original, which is good because when you start comparing is when this film was loss some its finness. Overall, amongst the direct-to-video lineup, this is one of the better ones!
