I was very excited about Julia’s Eyes because I love Guillermo Del Toro films with a great passion. I think his films have vibrant and intelligently executed cinematography. I had forgotten all about Julia’s Eyes (I had seen a trailer about a year ago, then forgot about it, and was happy to have reunited with the film), and I will probably revert to forgetting about it. First of all, the cinematography was still excellent, but something about the film just rubbed me the wrong way. The concept seemed neat, the acting was pretty good, and everything seemed set up for a great film, but it never gave me the overwhelming sense that I cared who the hell the killer was. I liked the main character very much, which is what made the film watchable to me, but Julia’s Eyes is almost like two films pushed together, written by entirely different people. The first half, Julia investigates her sister’s suicide like an awesome Spanish detective. Mystery and intrigue follows as Julia uncovers more about what happened to her sister. Then, once Julia loses her eyesight, the film shifts dramatically, enters new characters, and follows a disabled woman falling for her caretaker. I won’t give it away, but the identity of the killer becomes VERY clear at this intersection of the movie to a degree in which I felt insulted that they were trying to tote it off as a mystery and that there were still other suspects. They throw in a minor, yet lame, twist just before the big reveal, and then you are left lying there like a bird that’s been shot and has no idea what the hell is happening. Maybe thats a bad metaphor, but I guess it’s in line with how the movie made me feel. If i had to rate the first and last halves of the film individually , it would probably be something like 1st : 7.5 or 8/10 and the 2nd : 4/10. With that said, it was ONE film, so it gets what it gets based on those merits.
