I feel pretty lucky to have seen quite a few good romantic comedies this year! After, horror, they are one of my favorite genres (I know, they are very similar!). This was a film that I overlooked many times just because it looked pretty standard, but with films like this, I should always fall back on something I should know by now ; if it’s a genre film that offers a lot of the ‘same ole, same ole’ depend on the actors who are in the film. This isn’t an end all to be all, but I should’ve known if Paul Rudd and Michelle Pfeiffer was in this film, it had potential. Like I hinted at before, it doesn’t bring anything superb to the table as the genre is concerned, but it was a sweet movie. Paul Rudd’s character was hilarious, and his kidishness that kindles Pfeiffer’s “old” heart is really cute to watch. The film centers around a writer who falls for a younger actor (Rudd), and given their age difference she tries to keep away, but love will have none of that! Her daughter is going through her own love problems, and is basically one of the funniest characters in the movie. Tracy Ullman plays Pfeiffer’s…. fairy godmother, of sorts, giving her “old woman” advice. I assume it was her conscience (as she was rather negative). The opening scene in the film is of Ullman giving a monologue about mother nature and love, and needless to say, sets up the film for a very enjoyable 2 hours. One other thing, Michelle Pfeiffer has the uncanny ability to look even more attractive then when she was younger, even wearing and old gaudy yarn necklace with oversized beads that her daughter made her (who else can wear something that ugly and make it look good!!). Overall, If this is your genre, see this one, it’s well worth the watch.
