Going the Distance (2010)
Summary
Genre: Comedy, RomanceGoodies:
+ Decent romantic comedy in a genre weighted with mostly terrible writers, + Good actingBaddies:
- Still formulaic in many respectsA romantic comedy centered on a guy and a gal who try to keep their love alive as they shuttle back and forth between New York and San Francisco to see one another.
Romcoms are a dime a dozen now-a-days, and most of them are formulaic POOP (i’m looking at you, anything with Jennifer Aniston or Katherine Heigl). Going the Distance was refreshing. I was immediately drawn in by the really awesome title sequence that introduced the film. Don’t get me wrong, the film didn’t offer anything excitingly new or groundbreaking to the genre, but it was a film that was done well (which is a feat for this genre over the last few years). I love that Charlie Day was in it as well because whenever he was onscreen, there were sure to be some laughs. The film was sweet and although long-distance relationships aren’t a new facet of a plot, I think making it the primary focus and using it as a device worked well, and in reality, with formulaic films, the acting stands out amongst all else – and I think the acting was pretty good (although i’m a fan of both actors). Overall, worth a watch.
