Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆
Crazy, Stupid, Love in many ways was an indie romance film, I say that because it wasn’t chalked full of stereotypes and bullshit. It had the feel of a film like The Kids are Alright (not because Julianne Moore was in it either) or The Story of Us (but with a lighter tone). In many ways, it’s a case study of a dithering relationship, and I agree there are a lot of films out there like that, but the acting makes this particularly worth your while. The cast alone made me want to see this film (except maybe Kevin Bacon, but he isn’t a very prominent character). Marisa Tomei, even though plays a small role, is absolutely hilarious. If there were different actors, i’m not sure I would love this movie so much, but regardless, the film had great writing and really had me emotionally invested in the characters and situations.

If there were different actors, i’m not sure I would love this movie so much, but regardless, the film had great writing and really had me emotionally invested in the characters and situations. If you aren’t a fan of sappiness, you probably won’t like this movie though because the moments that I enjoyed the most (between all the laughing) were the moments where Cal was reaching out despite his constant efforts of being shut down. For me, I love films that have ambiguity as a key element, and I see the film playing off some of those elements. I say this based on the “whose fault is it” scenario we normally come across, and one can blame Moore’s character for this severance, but the film inspects these situations on a more complex level, which made it worth watching. There’s a few twists in the film too, which I think most people will hone is on as what made the film good, but I just saw those points as creating more situations for the characters to engage! Overall, I would recommend this movie for the folks who love comedic romances (not romantic comedies – if you want to have a conversation about the difference, i’m more than willing!)
