I remember the first time I saw the trailer for the film, and I thought, “Damn this takes place in oldey times,” then axes started flying and demons came out of the woodwork – and I was invested. Then I realized it was Abraham Lincoln as a death dealer – SOLD! The film will not win any awards for writing, but it was both innovative and fun. I haven’t read the book, so I can’t draw any parallels between the two for accuracy. The film centers around a young Lincoln who is trying to pursue a love interest, which becomes difficult when he ends up having to fight the forces of darkness. The story is told as a story through a note he leaves for a relative. The visual effects probably draw in the most accolades for the film. There were some slow spots here and there, but generally, Abe was kickin’ ass. We see a recreated Civil War with demons, and other historical moments spun in a very different light, which was refreshing to see at the theater. Overall, I would say this was a win!
