Insidious (2011)
I try not to let movie hype get to me because when I get excited for a film, I get really excited, then the film usually does not meet the expectations of the previews and trailers that are put out by the media, and although this is true about Insidious, I still enjoyed the hell out of the film. There aren’t a lot of mainstream horror releases that don’t aim for the cheap scare (loud noises, etc.), but insidious had style and character. I don’t want to give away too much because I want you to watch the film for yourself, but the basis of the story centers around a boy who is possessed (not really, but for all intensive purposes, well say that), and his family must cope with his comatose state. As the story goes on, we are introduced to the ghoulish characters in the film, who are downright awesome. One of the best things of the film are the evil characters. They are all unique in their own way (which reminds me a bit of 13 Ghosts), and the costume and character design was unparalleled to some of the films I have seen in recent years. The last film that came out in theaters that deserved a similar rating was probably “Drag Me to Hell”. The film was not flawless, it suffered a bit from some of the horror cliches we all know, but some of those worked in it’s favor. The nods to the Poltergeist films made me happy as well. Lin Shaye played the Zelda Rubenstein-type character perfectly. Insidious, as creepy as it can be, does not take itself too seriously and relieves this with the paranormal team that joins the team. I have to say my favorite part of the film was the ‘insidious’ character (the evil one inhabiting the child) – he had just the right amount of creepy old man, mixed with fantasy-horror (think Pans) and originality to make him one of the coolest characters in a horror film in quite some time – although he could never become a classic because we only see him for maybe 30 seconds in the entire film, sadly. If you like horror, even remotely, i’d see insidious, as it shines amongst a genre that is largely becoming a joke in the filmmaking world.
Trailer
I saw this last night!
How’d you like it?
it was great! actually something scary
and it wasnt stupid and ended creepily awesome
I was as scared a watching Silent Hill
Yeah, that is what I really liked about it – that it didn’t play on all the cheap tricks a lot of horror films do. Have you seen Drag me to Hell?
I havnt yet but it looks interesting
like those Paranormal Activity movies….in my opinion..retarded! so many ppl went on about how scary they were…and me being easily scared, was not scared and saw right thru the fakeness
Well, there is a huge problem with the documentary style horror – is that none of them are real, but people I guess feel that way when they are actually sitting there. Plus a lot of those films base themselves on the loud sound scare (PA def. does this). If you are going to do a doc-style horror, then it has to really set itself apart. The film TROLL HUNTER (check out my review on the site) is a really great doc-style film that works well because it doesn’t hinge on loud booms every 10 minutes. With that said I thought PA2 was a lot better because I think they focused more on the characters.
I have yet to see PA2 I might have to watch it if its worth it.
I liked it a lot more than PA1 for sure, it didn’t revolutionize anything, but I just liked that there were more characters, and it just felt like they spent a bit more time doing some actual writing.
The only part about Paranormal Activity that “got” me was the sudden bit at the end. But one of the persons I went to see it with had fallen asleep, and the other was just high and laughing at everything.
